Discovering new vantage points to view our natural surroundings leads many to the sport of kayaking. Kayaking can involve a challenge of endurance, a sweet camp spot on a deserted beach, accessing hiking trails few ever reach or simply enjoying the solitude of the water. Kayak touring takes us to the places we dream to go; need to go.

For the performance based kayak paddler, you have come to the right place. High angle kayak paddling draws in those in search of mastering technique, which in turn, develops more dynamic strokes. This athletic body positioning requires more commitment, but the pay off is quite rewarding. Our shorter, wider blades are much more efficient for this style of paddling.

    I have both the 220 cm Camano and the 215 Shuna, in fibreglass, probably could have gone 210 cm in the Shuna. Love them both. I’m kind of a mid angle paddler, neither high or low angle. The Shuna gives you more power, but it also requires more energy to get more speed, it’s nice to have both paddles. The Camano is my usual paddle. If you feel energetic, no headwind or opposing currents the Shuna will move you faster, but tire you sooner. Werner has some cool colours, and if you like black, go for the lighter carbon blades.

  • @coppershark1973

    The Shuna is a fantastic paddle and has really helped me with my bad shoulder issues. The catch is still powerful and the bent shaft seems to have stopped wrist and shoulder pain almost entirely. Bravo!

    Which is better for covering longer distances? Is maintaining the higher angle simply a manner of technique and thus better to focus on, or does the energy efficiency of the lower angle make up for a slower pace?

    • @wernerpaddles
      @wernerpaddles 3 года назад

      So you don't fatigue as quickly having to get the paddle up to forehead height every stroke, when covering long distances, we'd recommend a low angle paddle. High vs Low does not affect speed.

    • @chriskelvin248
      @chriskelvin248 Год назад

      Also, low-angle form has an added trick when trying to cover long crossings in windy conditions- the low angle of your stroke keeps the paddle closer to the water and may be protected from strong winds that blow over the waves. You can often feel the wind catching your paddle like a sail in certain conditions. Fighting this needs extra energy.

    I loathe these manufacturer PR videos. They say almost nothing that is relevant. That being said I've been using a fiberglass Camano for almost 15 years, (probably about a 1000 3-4 hour paddling sessions on the Pacific Ocean). It does move through the water with no shuttering - so it's balance is perfect. it's still in great shape, hasn't warped, cracked fallen apart in anyway. And I've mostly used it half-high angle - so yes it turns out I bought the wrong paddle but it still works. If I have any complaint I wish it had buoyancy at the ends like a wooden Inuit paddle so I could use it for stability when I'm taking a break. But I don't know how this might be accomplished without changing the paddle too much. And I know of no other commercially made fiberglass or carbon paddle that does this. Also I never use it 'feathered' -think that's unnecessary and more likely to cause you wrist problems than give you any advantage, and 90% of the people I see paddling are just using their arms and shoulders, including instructors I've seen! Learn an effective paddle stroke and you'll have a better experience. Hope this helps. (btw I came upon this video because I want to buy an adjustable Ikelos (high angle big face) paddle.

    Very good advice on paddles. I am a reservoir fisherman and I use low angle to cover large bodies of water and is less disturbing to get up on the fish.
